Northern Lights Cruises from the UK: Best Months, Lines and What to Pack

Updated 30 October 2026 by The Ahoy Fares Team
Watching the aurora from a ship's deck, with a hot chocolate in your hands and no light pollution, is about as easy as Northern Lights hunting gets. You can sail all the way to Arctic Norway from a British port, with no flights and no baggage limits. This guide covers when to go, which lines sail aurora itineraries from the UK, what the sun is doing at the moment, and what to pack.
Prices are per person, based on two sharing, and were checked on 30 Oct 2026 unless we say otherwise. Fares change, so always confirm on the booking page.

When is the best time to go?

The Northern Lights season in Arctic Norway runs roughly from September to April, and both Ambassador and P&O Cruises use that window. Cunard says the lights are most visible in Norway between October and March. UK aurora cruises cluster in two windows, and they feel quite different.
October and November: the "dark winter"
These months bring the longest hours of darkness, and so the most time to spot the lights.
Long twilight gives pastel skies and great photography.
Snow is less likely, so the skies can be clearer.
It's a good time for scenery, culture and museums. Whale watching from Alta is also possible at the right time of year.
February and March: the "light winter"
Days lengthen fast, so you get crisp, bright daytime sightseeing.
There's a better chance of snow, plus activities such as dog sledding, snowshoeing and visits to Alta's igloo hotel.
Snowfall can bring cloud, and cloud is the main thing that hides the aurora. Think of the lights as a lovely bonus rather than the whole point.
Fred. Olsen notes that in March, longer nights and often clearer skies can make for excellent sightings. Your choice comes down to this: go in autumn if you mostly want to watch, and in late winter if you want to be out doing things.

What is the sun doing? (Solar maximum explained)

The sun runs in cycles of about 11 years. In January 2026 the Met Office said solar maximum had "all-but-confirmed" taken place in 2024 and 2025, and that the sun was now in a declining phase. That isn't a reason to put off your trip. The Met Office points out that some of the strongest space-weather events have come after solar maximum. In January 2026, for example, the aurora was seen as far south as northern Italy. The Met Office says the darker winter months give the biggest window for sightings.
Our take: in Arctic Norway, which sits under the auroral oval, the lights don't depend on a record-breaking solar year. Clear, dark skies matter more, which is why your choice of month and itinerary counts. No line can guarantee a sighting.

Which lines sail Northern Lights cruises from UK ports?

Sailings are listed with the cheapest fare first.

Bolette, "In Search of the Northern Lights" (T2733). 11 nights from Southampton, 7 Nov 2027, Interior from £1,399, Ocean from £1,899, Terrace from £2,899, suites from £3,099, according to Fred. Olsen's own page (checked 30 Oct 2026). The route takes in the Seven Sisters, crosses the Arctic Circle, and calls at Sortland, Harstad and Molde.
Bolette, "In Search of the Northern Lights" (T2707). 10 nights from Newcastle, 14 Mar 2027. Superior Interior from £1,599, Ocean from £1,849, suites from £3,349, according to Fred. Olsen's own page (priced 12:35 on 30 Oct 2026). Freedom Fares include gratuities and selected drinks with lunch and dinner.
Ambassador Cruise Line
Ambassador's no-fly sailings run from UK regional ports. Its aurora voyages go in October/November and February/March.
Ambition, "Norway's Land of the Northern Lights" (A22703). 16 nights from London Tilbury, 8 Mar 2027. Inside from £1,399, Ocean View from £1,679. Balcony and suite cabins were showing as sold out. Ports include Ålesund, Trondheim, Tromsø, two days in Alta, Narvik, Åndalsnes and Molde, and an astronomy guest speaker is on board.
Autumn 2027 sailings. "Northern Norway's Lights & Landscapes" (17 nights, 15 Oct 2027) and "Aurora Borealis & Arctic Norway Discovery" (16 nights, 23 Oct 2027) are each listed from £1,489.
Ambassador says no-fly guests aren't affected by the EU's new Entry/Exit System (EES) border checks.
P&O Cruises
Aurora, Norway with overnights in Bodø, Narvik and Tromsø. 14 nights from Southampton, 19 Mar 2027, from £1,484 (lead-in fare from a UK cruise agent). The overnight stays give you extra evenings in port to look for the lights.
Aurora, R721 "Norway". 12 nights from Southampton, 17–29 Nov 2027, sold as a Northern Lights cruise. We couldn't see a live price for this one.
Aurora is P&O's smallest ship, carrying 1,910 guests, and the Norway voyages above are adult-only.
Cunard
Queen Victoria, "Norway and Northern Lights" (V724). 12 nights round trip from Southampton, 9–21 Nov 2027, calling at Trondheim, Tromsø (with a late-evening departure), Narvik and Stavanger.
Queen Anne, "Norway and Northern Lights" (H728). 12 nights round trip from Southampton, 12–24 Oct 2027, calling at Trondheim, Tromsø, Narvik and Stavanger.
Science and astronomy speakers may be on board. Cunard says sightings can't be guaranteed. Cunard's own pages showed no fare for either voyage when we checked on 30 Oct 2026.
Princess Cruises
Majestic Princess, "Search for the Northern Lights." Round trip from Southampton, 3 Mar 2027. Interior from £2,239, Balcony from £2,719, suites from £3,689 (from a UK cruise agent, checked 30 Oct 2026). Crew gratuities are extra and charged in US dollars unless you book a Plus or Premier package.
Saga Cruises
Spirit of Discovery, "Northern Lights and Arctic Vistas." 17 nights from Portsmouth, 20 Feb 2027, from £6,742. The fare includes travel insurance (or is £87 less without it), a chauffeur to the port, drinks, gratuities, Wi-Fi and an excursion in every port. Every cabin has a balcony. Ports include Bergen, Ålesund, Trondheim, Honningsvåg with the North Cape, an overnight in Alta, Tromsø and Flåm.
Hurtigruten (fly or join in Norway)
Hurtigruten's Dover-to-Dover "Northern Lights Expedition" on MS Maud was showing no available departures when we checked. For a UK-linked option, its Coastal Express with regional direct flights (Bergen–Kirkenes–Bergen, 12 days) is listed from £1,699 (December 2026), with flights from Manchester, London or Newcastle. Hurtigruten offers a "Northern Lights Promise" on voyages of 11 days or more between 20 Sep and 31 Mar: if the aurora doesn't appear, you get a free 6- or 7-day voyage.
Example fare, checked 30 Oct 2026. Prices change, so for today's checked prices see the live deals below.

What to pack

Hurtigruten's Norwegian motto sums it up: "There's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes." The secret is layers. Ships are kept warm inside, so you need to be able to add and remove clothing quickly.
Clothing
Base layers: thermal underwear in merino or synthetic fabric, which wicks moisture away from your skin.
Mid layer: a fleece or down jacket.
Outer layer: a hooded, windproof and waterproof jacket, plus waterproof trousers.
Extremities: a warm hat that covers your ears, a scarf or neck warmer, and gloves thin enough to work a camera (with warmer mittens on top).
Feet: broken-in waterproof boots with good grip, thermal socks, and ice grips or crampons for icy pavements. Hurtigruten sells crampons on board.
Keep a set by the door. When an aurora alert comes at midnight, you'll want to throw on a down jacket and slip-on boots fast.
Kit
Camera with spare batteries kept warm in an inside pocket, because cold drains them fast. A tripod helps for long exposures.
Power bank and adapters. Norway uses European type C and F plugs. Ambassador's cabins have UK three-pin sockets.
Head torch for evening walks ashore.
Binoculars for wildlife and scenery.
Lip balm and sun cream, as snow glare and dry Arctic air are tough on skin. Bring sunglasses too.
Seasickness remedies, because North Sea crossings can be lively.
Swimwear for hot tubs, and smart-casual outfits for any formal nights.
Documents
Norway follows Schengen rules. Your passport must have been issued less than 10 years before you arrive and must be valid for at least 3 months after the day you leave. Always check the latest GOV.UK travel advice before you sail.

Tips for better sightings

Choose itineraries with late or overnight calls, such as Tromsø, Alta or Narvik. They give you evening time ashore, away from the ship's lights.
Ask about aurora wake-up calls. Many ships make an announcement when the lights appear.
Sign up for the onboard astronomy talks. Fred. Olsen, Ambassador and Cunard all mention expert speakers.
Get out of town. City lights wash out faint displays.

FAQ

What's the cheapest Northern Lights cruise from the UK?
Of the fares we checked on 30 Oct 2026, two sailings tied for the lowest price, at £1,399 per person for an inside cabin: Fred. Olsen's 11-night Bolette sailing from Southampton (7 Nov 2027) and Ambassador's 16-night Tilbury sailing (8 Mar 2027). Ambassador's is longer, so it works out cheaper per night. Next came P&O's 14-night Aurora sailing (19 Mar 2027) from £1,484.
Is October or March better?
October and November give you the most darkness. February and March give you snow, activities and longer days, though snow clouds can hide the lights.
Will I definitely see the Northern Lights?
No line can guarantee it. Hurtigruten's Northern Lights Promise, on eligible voyages of 11 days or more, gives you the best chance.
Has solar maximum passed?
The Met Office says solar maximum all-but-certainly happened in 2024–25. It also says strong displays remain possible during the declining phase.
